Abigail Pionk - k-12 Dance Coach -BAsed In HIllsdale MI

Bio

At 3 years old my father wanted me to play hockey but after he took me to watch a performance of the Nutcracker Ballet I fell in love with the art of dance. Unfortunately for my poor father that love for dance quickly turned into my entire world and my dad got to spend many hours at the local dance studio far away from the ice rink.

Growing up I studied the Cecchetti and Vagonnva methods of ballet, Tap, Contemporary, Lyrical, Heels, Musical Theater, and my favorite jazz. For me dance is a celebration of life, a connection to my innermost feelings, and a way to communicate without constraints. It brings together physical strength, emotional depth, and artistic finesse in a harmonious blend that constantly challenges and completes me

At 16 years old I was blessed with the opportunity to assistant teach at my studio, this is when I realized my passion for teaching. I have never forgotten the moment one of my students figured out how to do a pas-de-bouree and we both jumped with excitment. Helping others discover their love for dance is the greatest gift and something I plan to continue throughout my life

The Meaning Behind "MW"

Meet Mitty and Winnie

A question I have received a lot is why did I choose the initials "MW". When considering many name options I was told to name my company after something I loved so my first thought was my two dogs Mitty and Winnie. Additionally something I have always loved about dance is how it can be used as a universal language. One summer I trained with a coach that spoke no English but we understood her the entire time through dance terminology. When you put "M" and "W" together it looks like a Zig-Zag pattern. The Zig-Zag is the most common combination in dance making it the most universal term.

Teaching Philosophy

As a dance coach, my philosophy revolves around fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that empowers students to explore, express, and appreciate the art of dance. My approach is centered on the belief that dance education extends beyond the studio, influencing personal growth, creativity, and teamwork.

Individualized Instruction:

  • I recognize and celebrate the unique qualities of each student. By tailoring my instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and interests, I aim to create an inclusive atmosphere where every student feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential in and outside of the classroom.

Holistic Development:

  • Dance is not only a physical activity but also a powerful tool for intellectual, emotional, and social development. I am committed to nurturing the whole child by integrating dance education with other academic subjects and life skills. Through this holistic approach, students will gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Creativity and Self-Expression:

  • I believe that dance is a form of self-expression and creativity. My teaching encourages students to explore their individual artistic voices, fostering a sense of ownership over their movements and choreographic choices. I strive to create a safe space where students feel free to take risks and express themselves through dance.

Teamwork and Collaboration:

  • Dance is often a collaborative activity which emphasizes the importance of teamwork. Through group choreography, collaborative projects, and performances, students learn the value of cooperation, communication, and mutual respect. These skills extend beyond the dance studio, preparing students for success in various aspects of their lives, such as academic, athletic, and work environments

Cultural Awareness and Diversity:

  • Dance is a rich tapestry of cultural traditions and styles. I am dedicated to exposing students to a diverse range of dance forms, fostering an appreciation for cultural differences and promoting global awareness. By exploring dance from various backgrounds, students gain a broader perspective on the world and develop a respect for diversity.

Life-Long Learning:

  • Dance is a lifelong journey of exploration and growth. My goal is to instill a love for learning and a passion through dance that extends beyond the classroom. I encourage students to use the skills they learn in class throughout their lives. Alongside technique I incorporate history with each lesson, ask questions for my students to answer to promote confidence, I work with each student individually at least once per class to foster a positive student-teacher relationship, and I teach students to encourage one another creating a bond between students. This approach fosters a commitment to continuous self-improvement as well as a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Positive Reinforcement and Encouragement:

  • Positive reinforcement is key to building confidence and motivation. I provide constructive feedback and praise to acknowledge each student's progress. By creating a supportive atmosphere, students feel empowered to take risks, overcome challenges, and develop a positive mindset towards both their dance education and personal development.
